Came from Alberta and will be placed in orphanage

My mother, Shirley Olive Gordon, was placed in an orphanage sometime around 1937 in Los Angeles or Hollywood, CA. She has a brother Fred and her mother's name was Irma Ablitt. She was involved in 1934 in Los Angeles- I believe. It was in the newspaper. You will not find a birth certificate on my mother in the US as she was born in Alberta, Canada, and to be honest with you, I'm not even sure she ever became a US citizen. There was always a lot of mystery around that issue for me as a child, and I remember one time she told me that she didn't vote because she wasn't a US citizen. At least that's the way I remember it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
