Scottish Muschett/Mushet/Muschet to Jamaica

At some point in the 1700's (or earlier), my ancestors left Scotland for Jamaica. Their last name was spelled in several ways: Muschet, Muschett, Mushet. They could have left as early as 1655 as criminals, POW or indentured servants, or between 1745-46 after the failure of the Jacobite Rebellion. Regardless, ships' records were not kept during this period, so I am hoping to find some family legend or letters or other kinds of records which could give me a clue as to when they left. It is also possible that they originally meant to go to Canada or the American colonies, and migrated from there to the West Indies. Any clues would be very much appreciated. Thanks in advance!
