I did send for military records for my ancestor who was a Captain in the U.S. Army from 1856 to 1866, however, not much was saved until the Civil War. Since this soldier was a Medal of Honor recipient, I did receive all the available information on him, which did not include names of parents or any other family members.

I went the usual route sending in the proper forms but was told by the Archives they would have to hire an outside researcher to find the records and was I willing to pay for it. I agreed. Contained in the material were several very interesting letters he wrote to the War Department about his exploits with the Indians and other matters....but NO MENTION OF PARENTS!!!! Darn!

Thank you for responding. I appreciate your input.

Marilyn
