Hi Elizabeth!
This means that we are cousins. Thank you for the information about John, because I hadn't invested the time to find out what had happened after he left Mississippi.
Go here on my tree to start with him to see what I have:

William is buried in Marion County, Alabama. I can't remember the cemetery off the top of my head. He was married to Mary Byford. William's parents were George Emerson and Esther Robinson, and they are also buried in Marion county. Mary Byford's father was William Byford, and they were also residents of Marion county.
I don't know why John would have taken the name Stodard. On the Emerson side, I think that the lineage is mostly English, with some possible Irish or Scots. There is another unrelated line that has a French ancestor, but not this one. William Emerson's brother Matthew Emerson, married into an Indian family (this is my line). We've had some reunions of George Emerson's descendants in Marion County, and it's pretty evident--everyone has reddish hair and freckles except us, and we have dark hair, eyes, and skin. :) I'm not sure about the Goddard or Byford sides.
You can email me directly if you wish.
