to Marsha: where have I been?? My grandmother
had her mother's papers pertaining to the
Emerick family's class-action lawsuit against
the Astors. Her mother was the daughter of
Marie Emerick, born 9/18/1813 in Hesse, Germany.
She married Adam Miller from Darmstadt, Germany.
Her story was of a close relative ( I thought it
was her father) but that he was in the fur business
and was very successful, and he took a poor but
talented man J.J. Astor under his wing and they
planned to be partners in his fur business, but that
Emerick disappeared off that ship mysteriously to US,
and they never heard from him nor saw him again.
AND J.J. ASTER then opened his fur business in NYC,
became an instant success.
Is Marie Emerick one of the names you are aware of?
She and her husband Adam Miller, an engineer, came
first to Milwaukee and then to San Francisco @ 1855.
Her daughter Lydia joined with many others in an
effort to seek justice from the Astors.
I would appreciate any information.
Sincerely, N. Inferrera
