Hi Ingrid. I did not know you were referring to Calvin Hoy's book. Yes, I have read that. I was surprised that it has some different information than Hoy's letters to my grandmother found in the little brown suitcase. I decided just to use the information from his letters in the suitcase and ignore what he said in the book that did not match up. In fact, I used nothing from his book, although much of it does mesh with his letters. It is puzzling to me why the discrepancies. But there are many things in this story that are told in different ways by different people. Hummm..just like the John Kerry Swift Boat experience today. I do not know why Hoy would have changed his information when he got around to writing the book. I know he was not a good writer. His letters lack clarity. In some of them he seems to lose focus and it is hard to figure out what he wants to say. On the other, hand some of his opinions are crystal clear and he was not afraid to express them. Much of his dialogue in my book is directly from his letters. I felt that this story cried out to be dramatized. I think Hoy's book did not have much impact as it is dry, unemotional reading. No reflection on your translation intended.
I am pleased to hear you bought my book and will look forward to a review when you have read it. I see Princeton is in your address. I took the GRE at Princeton in the 70s when I went for my Masters at Wm Paterson. Used to hang out there at the cafes and buy books at the Princeton book store. Great to hear from you. Carol
