I am going over your Ely genealogy comparing it to mine (which by the way is much of the source of Silas Ely's records- He is my ex-husband- though he has done lots of research since we split)
I find some minor disagreements as to dates and stuff-
The family story (coming throughSi's family from his father, John Burgoyne and Aunt Ellen Kuykendall, both of whom got the information from their father, George Burgoyne, son of Green Clay Ely-etc.)
is that Thomas Ely ran away from England when he was 13 years old to avoid yet another whipping at his school. He became a cabin boy on a ship- and stayed at sea for thirty years during whioch time he worked his way up the chain of command. In 1750 he married Jane Smith whom he met on the voyage over from Ireland.
We too have been back to Lee Co., where we met the Orr Cousins who lived in the OLd John Ely farmhouse. They showed us the graveyard with no stones.
One interesting problem I noticed along to way was about David and Sarah (Claypoole) Ely. They did not move to Lee County until 1796.Both died in Indiana.
I've got lots more--
