Hi, Rhonda,

It's hard to keep the generations straight when they kept re-using the same names.

Thomas Ely, the immigrant, married Jane Smith. I believe he was injured, but not killed, in the Revolutionary War.

Second generation: John Ely, the son of Thomas Ely and Jane Elizabeth Smith, was born abt 1755 in VA and married Barbara Jane Fry in 1783

Third generation: Thomas Ely, the son of John Ely and Barbara Jane Fry was b. abt 1785, and married Isabel Shackleford in 1804.

Fourth generation: Green Clay Ely, the son of Thomas Ely and Isabel Shackleford was b. 1819, married Mary Ruth "Polly" Keith in 1839.

So it goes: Thomas, John, Thomas, Green Clay, (and so forth).

Hope that helps. I'm descended from Green Clay's son George Burgoyne Ely.

Carol
