Where did our William Elwood come from before settling in Westmoreland County?
It appears he lived in Cumberland County, PA specifically Antrim Township. The PA Archives 3d series Vol XX pages 118, 252, 388, 536 list him in Antrim on the tax rolls: 1779 1 horse 2 cows; 1780 1 horse 3 cows; 1781 1 horse 2 cows; & 1782 1 horse 2 cows.
An inquiry I made to the Cumberland County Historical Society advised in 1780 tax rates for Antrim Township listed William Elwood a weaver, owning one horse 3 cows but not the owner of any acreage and in 1782 the owner of 3 sheep in the addition to the horse. He was not in the list of deeds. No other record of him or Jean Stoops in their files.
The PA archives list his service in the Revolutionary War where he served in the Cumberland County Militia in various units from 1778-1782. He served in Col James Johnston unit except for in 1779 he is listed in Captain John Jack's Company (note that company still may have been under the command of Col Johnston however)
Elsie Warden notes she has "a certified copy of William Elwood's service in The American Revolution." Not sure exactly what she meant by certified records and apparently it was not deposited with the DAR history she prepared, at least I did not receive it, when I got a copy of her history. A few descendants have been admitted to the DAR based upon his service. When I wrote to the National Archives years ago, they had no record of his service.
Tradition says he fought at the Battle of Brandywine. I never had time to see if the Cumberland County Militia participated in that battle. Tradition also says when he came to Westmoreland County his son William was "a babe in arms". It also mentions cribs so maybe Robert was also born before they left for Westmoreland County. Could not find any record of their births. Never thought to check with Presbyterian church records in Cumberland County, however.

Warden's history reveals a William Elwood acted as a witness to a will of William Stitt Aug. 8, 1776 Antrim Township Lancaster County. She also mentions another Will witnessed in 1791, but she notes that may have been another William Elwood. I don't know anything about the County borders in those days (Lancaster Cty and Cumberland Cty).

I will leave my last post to discuss where William was born.
Bob Ellwood
