As a novice family researcher there were times when I did not properly document what I did not find. For example I have no record of William in the 1830, 1820, & 1800 Federal census. I assume he must be enumerated in Franklin Township since we know he purchased his land in 1815 and died a resident of Franklin Township. For some reason I do not believe I ever checked those years. If any one has the census information I would appreciate a copy.

I have a copy of the 1810 and 1790 federal census of Franklin Township. In 1810 our William is enumerated as William Sr. Also in the same county was William Jr. and Thomas, presumably the older sons. There were 2 male children between 16-26 who resided in Franklin Township with our William. Since William and Thomas have their own households, the 2 older males I suspect were Robert & George (presumably born in 1788 would have been 22). The 2 children between ages of 10-16 would most likely be James & John. The three females would have been wife Jean and Esther? ( she didn't marry until 1819) and Jennie? (the youngest). Or on the other hand maybe Jennie wasn't born yet and therefore it could have been Mary, who had a son 1815. If any one has an entry in the census for Archibald Adair, her husband, that might help.

The tax list for Franklin Township, Westmoreland County dated Oct 1, 1798 list William having a cabin, small stable 18x20. A cabin with how many children? how many small children?

In the 1790 census he is listed in Franklin Township with 3 males under 10 ( William, Robert, George). The three females wife Jean and Mary? Esther?.

Of course, I realize other children who died young could have been enumerated as well , mistakes of enumerators etc. I believe these records as well as the census records that I haven't seen are the only primary records of William in Westmoreland County. If any on else has anything else, I sure would like to know.

The biography of John B. Elwood, Armstrong County, Her people, past & present (1914) says William came to Westmoreland in 1783. That certainly is plausible. Where did he come from? I'll leave that for my next post.
