The William Elwood (no middle initial listed) that married Jane McGranahan was the son of William J. Elwood of Westmoreland County. William J. Elwood, of Westmoreland County died around 1832 (I have a copy of his will). The William J. Elwood that married Jean Stoops lived in Westmoreland County and was a veteran of the Revolutionary War. These two Williams are frequently and erroneously confused in geneological accounts done for members of the Elwood family in Western Pa. The similarity of "Jane and Jean" can account for some of the mistakes. There are many other mistakes in the listing of names for the Elwoods of Western Pa, over the years.

The William Elwood(no middle initial listed) that married Jane McGranahan is buried in downtown Punxatawny, Pa. next to his wife. he died in 1855. The last digit on the stone is hard to read and it could be either a 3 or a 7. His grave is marked with a Civil War veteran marker, which is an impossibility. It is more likely to presume that he served in the War of 1812.

William I. Elwood is buried in a very difficult to find cemetary in rural Indiana County. I have not researched his line at all. But the proximity of his grave, to that of James Elwood (Also buried in rural Indiana County.) suggests that he may be descended from James Elwood. But I certainly have no proof of that, one way or the other.

I am attempting to acquire as much info as I can on which Elwood is which, here in Western Pa. from the descendants. It is an absolute nightmare to try and keep the lineage's straight. It is much easier working with the pre-Civil War Elwoods that it is those of the post Civil War era.

As much as this all drives me crazy, I am glad I have been persistant in researching my Elwood roots. The confusion with these "Williams" is just the tip of the iceberg to understanding this family.

I used only documents that are in the Courthouses and found in the graveyards to identify my heritage. Thanks for posting.

William J. Elwood
