I hope that someone in England can help me. I am looking for the family of Joseph P. Elwell born abt. 1816 in England. He married Rebecca....? born about 1820 in England. I found one possible listing for just Joseph on the 1841 census for D-13 Wednesbury, Staffordshire, England. The census lists Joseph as a shoe maker, which was his profession in the United States. The oldest child of Joseph that I know of was Edward J. (Edwin) Elwell born March 8,1843 in Brooklyn, New York. This would indicate that Joseph and Rebecca married between 1841 and 1842. They came to the United States by March 1843. The other children were Henry born abt. 1845 in NY, Sarah born abt. 1847 in NY, Ellen born abt. 1850 in NY, and Rebecca born 1852 in New Jersey. In 1850 the family lived in Hoboken, Hudson Co., New Jersey, and in 1860 they lived in Newark, Ward 12, Essex Co. New Jersey. I could not find Joseph and Rebecca on any other census. I believe Sarah may have married Dennis Van Nest and Rebecca married Samuel Pitney. The last address I have for Rebecca and Samuel Pitney was Elmira, Chemung Co. NY. Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated.
