Think I have solved our little puzzle about why Martha Susan Payne was living with Alexander and Martha Elson at the time of her marriage. I now have her guardianship papers from the death of her parents. It appears that the conecting thread making her a "relative of the family" is the Maxwell/Toliver connection. It is looking like her parents were John Adam Payne (as we knew) and Phoebe Toliver (the daughter of Elizabeth Maxwell and James Toliver. The guardian was a single man, Isaac Chatham, a son of Ann Maxwell, Elizabeth's oldest sister.
