Hi - seeking any information on the family listed below in the 1850c, Washington Co VA (WCV) - cannot locate thereafter; cannot locate in the pers. prop. tax lists, etc. I have tried Nelms, Helms, etc., etc. This is a big mystery and I would very greatly appreciate any help in solving it. Need especially the female surnames. Best Wishes! Jack Hockett email@example.com
*HH330: ELMS, Jessee, 50; Amy, 85; Lucy, 50; James, 25; Joseph, 30: (No trace of this family after1850c; likely due to spellings Jesse/Jessee Elms/Helms/Elam, etc. Not on PPTLs, WCV, Upper 1850-70 or 1849-50. Extensive search has not turned up any evidence of this family post-1850c... a remaining “great mystery of WCV”.
Perhaps: WCV Minutes of Overseers of Poor: p. 68: List of claims to be levied in poor rates for WCV between 20 Dec 1832 and 20 Dec 1833... Jessee, a boy of colour; $42; John Loyd, $42; John Fulks, 11 Jan when he came to 20 Dec 1833, $40; John Percival from 20 Dec 1832 to 26 Apr 1833; Betty, a woman of colour, from 15 Aug to 13 Sep 1832, $3.50; Rachel Helms, $42; Eliza Ann Bowan from 23 May 1832 to 20 Dec 1833, $24; James Helms, $27...)
The entry is similar in some ways (ages aside!) to that of HH107: Earls, Jesse L., 32; Ann, 33 (Amy and Anny oft mistaken for each other in writing!), 33; Lucy, 4; James A., 2; Zachariah, 2 – 2, 3, and 5 are oft also mistaken for each other in reading handwriting!)
