This reprint of a letter was found in the late 1800's among the papers of one of his grandsons:
Windsor Vt. April 23, 1810
"I Jonathan Burt am this day 67 years, seven months and nine days old. I have an impression on my mind sinse the reclamaton began in Windsor to write some brief account of my life experience. I was born in the town of Northfield, Mass. in the year 1742, Sep 3 old style. My father's name was Aaron Burt, son of Joseph Burt, on of the first settlers of Northfield, and my mother's name was Miriam Elmer, daughter of Hezekiah Elmer, one of the first settlers in Northfiels, and as God has given me and retained a strong memory I can will remember events that took place whin I was but very young. The first I will menshion my Uncle Asahel Burt and Nathaniel Dickerson who was killed by the Indians in 1747, April 15, old style. I then being 4 years, 7 months and 12 days old, well remember the alarm. My mother and aunt with their children ran up to the fort toward the enemy. A solger came running with all his mite and sayeth, "Dont' go this way, for God's sake," however when they broat in my uncle and jDickerson I ran out of doors to see them and did see them lying on my uncle's mare, which was not hurt. They were killed like two ded sheep with their heads hanging down one side and feet on the other of the mare, with their scalps taken off from thier heads-----there is more, but this is a lot to put on this site. Margaret
