Sounds like your branch stayed north - they must have heard about the southern humidity!!

Have you actually been able to trace it back to the 1600's? You might be dealing with a name change post-UK period. I would try ports of call. They had to enter the country somewhere, and back then, there weren't many ports.

I have seen documentation of Elmores in Lancaster Co. VA in 1664. There were probably cousins and other family on the ship, perhaps related, maybe not closely.

I have also seen the spelling referred to with the last 'e' dropped but I think that was an error. Maybe the clerk couldn't write so well, or the interpretator couldn't read so well.
