I've just come across Roy's interesting comments on Elmers/Elmores in the North Oxfordshire / Banbury area.
I've had great difficulty tracking down family members in this area. My great-great-great grandmother was Matilda Elmer born at Deddington in 1789 to Henry Elmer and Ann Butcher (married Henry ELMORE at Deddington in 1788). I have collected quite a few records from those days although nothing specific to take me back any further. Clearly there were quite a few in the family around Banbury. After Matilda and her husband (John Smith) had moved away (to Upper Slaughter in 1815), I have noted a family around Steeple Aston, only a mile or two south of Deddington.
Interestingly, Matilda's daughter, Elizabeth Smith married to Isaac Williams, moved to Tasmania in 1842 and became the first sttlers in the Caulfield area of Melbourne; she died in 1908 (was born 1816). My aunt who turned 99 in October 2005 was alive (as a little girl) while her great-grandmother was still living - bridging a few centuries there!
What is the story behind "Banbury Tom"?
Sounds like we must have a common ancestor back in the 1700s or 1600s!
