Colonel Ellsworth died a Hero's death in the Civil War removing a flag from the Marshall House in Alexandria Virginia in April of 1861. He was the first Officer Killed in the Civil war and was a VERY good friend of Abraham Lincoln. Because of his hero status, many people born after this incident were give Ellsworth as a middle name.
