There was a famouse Colonel Ephraim Elmer Ellsworth who was a hero in the Civil War. He was shot at the Marshall House in Va. trying to remove a flag. After his death in 1861, many folks named their children after him. He was also a very close friend of Abraham Lincoln and his body lay in state at the White House. This may not be the origin of your particular ancester, but the timing is very close.

Sharon
