Hello all Please be very very careful when referring to German Ellsworth's book. It is full of misconceptions and even as re-researched still perpetuates a number of glaring errors. The most basic fact of all is that there is no EVIDENCE to link Josiah ELLSWORTH and Stoffel ELSWORTH. I know that Stoffel Elsworth of New Amsterdam was born in Bristol England in 1625 because his marriage record in Amsterdam in 1647 tells me that FACT. It says nothing about brothers or anything else. He arrived in New Amsterdam in 1652 aboard a ship called the Romeijn, also a matter of documentary record. It is significant, certainly up to about 1800 that the NY ELsworths spelt their name with a single 'L' and the Connecticut lot with two 'LL's, and that is what distinguishes the two, completely separate familes. Ancestral file and all the other sources which mention Sir John Ellsworth from Bristol Cambridgeshire, Eelsworth, etc at various dates as progenitor of the families are complete hogwash, inconsistent, and not, as far as my researches are concerned, founded on anything better that a fairy tale. Unless of course you can PROVE otherwise!! I've read German Ellsworth's article, and I wouldn't give it house room. If you would like further comment on this please see Tom McCarthy's notes on German Ellsworth and others at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ellsput/EllsFamH.htm And, please feel free to email me back, and I'll be happy to continue the discussion, and provide supporting documentation. Best wishes John Notify Administrator about this message?
