Thanks for your note. German Ellsworth did a masterful job with his Ellsworth genealogy, but got some things mixed up. There were 2 primary branches of the English immigrant Ellsworths, and sometimes he mixed up similar names between the two branches. (I have the notes of Mr. Ransford Curry who rechecked German's work some years ago and he found many errors in that work.) Josiah was the progenitor of the "Connecticut branch" and his brother Theophilus was that of the "New York City branch". I have printings from the 1930s which states that Theophilus' name was often spelled mistakenly as "Christopher" and some Dutch-related names (NYC was New Amsterdam when he arrived about 1650 & his wife was Dutch). His name was spelled Elsworth at that time which was also converted to various Dutch names. But when he died his name on documents was spelled Ellsworth, but for several generations later, his descendants spelled it was 'Elsworth'. I have Theophilus in a Rootsweb file and will try to send the link to your e-mail address. Happy to discuss this further. Alton Ellsworth Rogers Notify Administrator about this message?
