Thank you, Marilyn, for the information about the Ellsworth(s) of Pownal. Here is what I have about James Ellsworth's family: According to our records, James was the father of Isaac Clark Ellsworth, a "hatter" in Pownal, who moved to what is now Paw Paw, Illinois in ~1839. ( The cemetery in Paw Paw is named Ellsworth cemetery.) James moved back to New York from Pownal and died there, which is why you find nothing in Pownal about him or his family. My first cousin knows where he is buried.

I do not know for certain that Judiah E. is my ancestor. Our information goes back only to a James Ellsworth, then Isaac Clark E., Benjamin Franklin E., Edmund Harlow E., then Gladys E. who was my grandmother. Grandma claimed to be a relative of Col. Elmer E. and kept newspaper obituaries about her family.
She also mentioned some Ellsworths that moved on to California and made it big in the early wine industry there.

Is it possible that "your" James is "My" James? Let's keep in touch!!
