Inscription Re. Ellsworth Found In 1875 Book
Posted by: Lisa Murray Date: November 12, 2001 at 19:00:48

When my father in law passed away, we found among his possessions a book simply entitled "Ellsworth". It appears to have been published in 1875 and is about the dedication of the Elmer E. Ellsworth monument in Hudson View Cemetery in Mechanicville NY.

Inside the book, there is an inscription which reads: "This book was presented to Mr. and Mrs. A.N. Barnes by Captain Ephraim Ellsworth and wife -- the Parents of Col. E.E. Ellsworth, the first martyr of the Civil War. Later transferred to our Son (and his family) W.J. Barnes. By their Parents Albert N. and T. Augusta Barnes. N.B. The above Mrs. Ellsworth's maiden name was Phoebe Denton and Mother of T. Augusta Barnes was Eliza Denton --- they being cousins, both born the same night."

I have no idea where my father in law got this book as so far I see no connection from his family (Murray/Liddle) to the families mentioned above. However, I don't want to part with it. I just thought that the above inscription might be some help to an Ellsworth researcher.

If anyone would like a copy of this page, I would be happy to scan it and send it to you. There are also additional notes that Mr. Barnes made in the back of the book re. Col. Ellsworth's funeral which are interesting.
