Samuel Ellsworth (Samuel-Josiah-Josiah) was b 1 Oct 1718 in Windsor,CT. He died in 1803 Arlington, VT. He md Mrs. Aimee Holiday Matson (widow of Josua Matson) of Simsbury, CT, 2 Dec 1746. She was b 6 May 1703, the d/o William Holiday and Anna Ellis (Spelling at times is Halliday) She died 1778 in Pittsford, VT.
Samuel is described by Caleb Hendee as a man "Of light complexion, blue eyes, middle stature, thick set, firm constitution, sedate countenance, and much given to study. In his youth he worked as a weaver and acquired by his own exertion considerable information. He calculated almanacs for several years in CT and for one year in VT. At the age of 30 or more, he md Amiee Mtson, a widow with 2 children Isaac and Lucy." (Colleens Note: there were more) He served as assessor in 1774 and 1775. Inaddition to farming he practiced land surveying and assessing. Hendee also said: "During the war (Revolutionary) he lost most of his property. He was pious, and a member of the Copngregational Church." Samuel was on the military pay roll as Sgt Samuel Ellsworth of Capt. Benjamin Collely's Co. in Colonel Ebenezer Allen's Reg of Militia. They were called to action Mar 23-28 inclusive in 1780. Soon after his discharge in Oct of 1780 Samuel moved to Arlington where he lived with his son, Samuel until his death in 1803. His estate was inventoried at about $3,000.
