Hi Robin, I am so happy you responded to my post. I had my doubts that I would ever find out much about Lizzie Ellison Scott, figuring that since Samuel "Sam" Ross Scott died so young, that she would have remarried and changed her last name. I was shocked when I did find her death certificate in the Texas Death Certificates on FamilySearch.org's web site. That site has been a real help to me. I must have about 500 death certificates downloaded from there saved to my hard drive already, and printed out as well. I am not a direct descendant of Lizzie or Sam Scott. I descend from Sam's older sister, Ella Eva Scott (1858-1894), who married Allen Miller Dugger. Ella and Allen's oldest child and daughter, Mary Annie Dugger (1880-1971), is my grandmother. She was married to Ernest D. Young (Sr.) I do remember my grandmother talking about her uncle Sam Scott, who died very young. She told me that Sam was her favorite uncle, but she didn't tell me how he died and under what circumstances that I can recall, and since I was not into genealogy at the time, I didn't ask. The family story of Samuel Ross Scott's untimely death is below, where I have enclosed in brackets the notes for Sam Scott that I made some years back. They are taken from Samuel's page in my Family Tree Maker file. They were written before I had found Sam's and Lizzie's death certificate and I have not yet modified the notes to reflect what the two death certificates show, namely the part about no headstone for Lizzie, her possible remarriage and being buried by a second husband. My Aunt, [ Adele Young Donaho (1911-2000), said her mother, Mary Annie Dugger Young, told her Sam died in an accident when he was driving a Conestoga-type wagon and it overturned. His thigh was split open and the wound was full of dirt and gravel. The doctor in Staples was drunk and did not clean it out before he stitched up the wound. Sam died from blood poisoning caused by the dirt in the wound. For years afterward there was a local song sung (around the Staples area) about how Sam died of the stitches from the drunken doctor. In the Mary Dugger (1847-1915) Bible notes sheet, Adele states that Sam was killed at Hunter, Texas. Linda Lee Martin Ainsworth (1941-2001) wrote in her files that her grandfather, James Thomas Holmes, son of Maggie Scott Holmes [Margaret Meda Scott, an older sister of Samuel Ross Scott], told her it was a "Tally-Ho race", which was a horse and buggy race, from San Marcos to Austin, the buggy overturned and Sam was killed. She did not state that he was killed immediately, so he still could have died from the blood poisoning caused by the dirt in the wound as stated above. (Of course Sam's death certificate confirms that he didn't die immediately.) Samuel Ross Scott was a member of the Woodmen of the World according to the emblem on his tombstone. There was no headstone for his wife. Is it possible she remarried and was buried by her second husband? I think that is likely.] I have been to Staples, Texas, many times to both Tuttle Cemetery and to Staples Cemetery, since I have family in both. Lizzie's death certificate just stated that she was buried by Pennington Funeral Home in Pleasant Ridge Cemetery located in Staples. I have never seen a cemetery there by that name and it's not listed as a cemetery on the Guadalupe County TXGenWeb site. I'm going to Austin later this week and on my way through San Marcos I was going to stop by Pennington's Funeral Home and ask where Pleasant Ridge Cemetery is located. Do you know the physical location in Staples of the cemetery? Do you know anything about Sam and Lizzie's children? What were their full names, when were they born exactly, what happened to them, where did they die and where are they buried. Are any of his grandchildren or descendants still alive? Since I don't have anything about Jacob's parents or his siblings, I don't have Holloway in my file. How are you connected to Elizabeth "Lizzie" Ellison, starting with Jacob Lewis Ellison? And, do you know who the "Mrs. M. L. Allen, Sr." is that was listed as the Informant on Lizzie's death certificate? Please e-mail me at my home e-mail address, eyoung@_felpsis.net, without the underline. Again, thank you for answering my post. I will share anything I have on Samuel Ross Scott and Elizabeth "Lizzie" Ellison. Ernest Young Notify Administrator about this message?
