Some on this message board are interested in William Green Ellison (1839-1929 in Southern Illinois). I have more information to share, hopefully shaking out more leads.
When last we left Green, he was in Ina, Jefferson County, IL, from 1880 to 1929 (the year of his death). We know he married Sarah Fox in 1871, and was married to Drusilla Nowlin of Calhoun County, Arkansas in 1860. He was in the War in the Confederate Army, last accounted for in 1863.
I now have a lead that he was living in Washington County, IL, in 1865 (Illinois did a census every 10 years opposite the federal census; federal census in 1850, IL in 1855, fed in 1860, IL in 1865, etc.). He appears in the Washington County, IL census in 1865 with William Ellison (his then 2 year old son) and a woman (we know not who... yet). According to a book containing marriage records for Washington County I located at the Urbana, IL Free Library Archives, William Green Ellison married a Sophronia Cates in 1865 in Washington County, IL.
What leads me to be certain this in fact my ancestor is that Sarah Fox was also a native of Washington County, IL, according to her death certificate. She also appears with her family in the 1870 census for Washington County, IL. I am certain she and Green married (Green's THIRD marriage) in Washington County, IL, between 1870 and 1880.
I am headed to Washington County either tomorrow or next week to get the papers to confirm these facts.
Anyone know of the Cates-Ellison link, fill us in please.
