Chuck, I had e-mailed you earlier today about a message you had sent me regarding this John Ellis being a son of Edward and Sarah Lake Ellis. Then I found this message and started looking through my material as I knew I had what you were looking for. This should answer your questions (or possibly create more!).
This information is from the Ellis Cousins Newsletter, Spring 1993, Page 31.It has a picture of two men on horses sitting beside a farmhouse. The caption reads (verbatim from the newsletter):
OKLAHOMA RANCH FAMILY -- Robert Stuart Freeny and his father, John Ellis Freeny, are shown here overlooking the Stuard Ranch which is probably the oldest continuously family-owned ranch in Oklahoma, and is located near Soper in Choctaw Co.Photo on the right is the family home built in 1837 by Robert Clay Freeny and wife SARAH ELLIS, which was the family's first home in the Choctaw Nation.Sarah's parents were John Ellis and wife, Mary, daughter of the famous Choctaw Chief MoShuLaTubby.JOHN ELLIS (1802-1835) was employed by the government as an interpreter and guide. His job was to move the Choctaw Indians from Mississippi into Southeast Oklahoma in 1832.He died in Vicksburg MS in 1835 on a trip back to Choctaw Country.ECN member Ellis Freeny, 6208 Waterford Blvd, #105, Oklahoma City, OK, 73118, is searching for more information about this ancestor for whom he was named. The Freeny cattle brand, the "Lazy R," was established in 1834 and later registered with the Chocatw Nation.Just last year, a large rock was discovered in the chimney of the 156-year-old homeplace with the Lazy R brand carved into it.Ellis Freeny retired last year as executive officer of the Oklahoma Cattlemen's Association for the past 30 years. If anyone has suggestions on this John Ellis, please contact Ellis Freeny at the above address."
All that said, in answer to your e-mail to me about John being a son of Edward and Sarah Lake, Mr. Ollie Ellis researched the Ellis family of Leake County, MS and wrote a book about them -- Tales and Trails of Four Families.I also found an article about Mr. Ollie and his wife Nina in the Ellis Cousins Newsletter (winter 1988, page 9) where he states that Edward and Sarah had nine children, but he had only been able to document eight of them (William, Rebecca, Richard W., Elizabeth, Sarah J., Julian Frances, Edward Thomas, and James Lake).I have information on all of these children and their spouses and descendants.
I wonder if this John could possibly be the unknown son of Edward and Sarah?I can give you the name of the editors of the Ellis Cousins Newsletters for the issues above if you are interested in them. There is a new editor, but the previous editors should have the copies of the issues I mentioned above.
Please contact me directly ([email protected]) if I can be of further help. You have me curious now about John being the unknown son!
Amanda
