This is not a family line of mine but I came across these sketchy details in a folder at the local genealogy library and thought I would post it here. Would think it an interesting story and would like to find if it is true or not. The April 27, 1889 edition of the Birmingham Herald reports that Miss Fannie Ellis, heiress, has been living in destitution on Lookout Mountain in Alabama. In 1851 a man married a Miss Hallett of New Bedford, Mass using an assumed name. He left town very quickly then returned about a year later claming that his real name of Augustus Franklin Ellis. He died in 1884. It was brought to the attention of the executor of his estate that he had a second family in the south, this would be Fannie. Her mother was Martha Paty. Martha married another gentleman but both died soon after. This left Fannie to be raised by an aunt, they lived on Lookout Mountain 3 miles from Greenwood, AL. There was also mention of money that Augustus swindled from his mother-in-law. Does any one know who this Augustus could be? Notify Administrator about this message?
