Tony, You mis-understood Robert b. 1727 had a son Johnston b.1748 named after his brother b.1719-20.He had a son William who was orphaned. That is my understanding.
The double T spelling is an indicator of Ulster origins. From the old Rhyme Whence came Elliott,
"....For the double L and double T,
Scots must look across the sea."
Meaning Ulster.
Robert b.1730 was in the Royal Marines if I remember right .I would have to look up.(a clerk on the HMS Royal George).Gavin b.1727 was the merchant in Danzig,W.Prussia.Source :The Border Elliots and the Family of Minto,G.F.S.Elliot,pub.1897 Pedigree of Midlem Mill.
When I said that it might be a different William there are many just in the Midlem Mill line.Several in Robert b.1695 line through his sons(9).Have you ever heard ofGeometric progression of Multiples? It applies to the Elliot Clan...The family uses the same names for centuries.
