Read these 3 posts in reverse order as they are listed the most recent first.Then they'll make sense.
Kathryn, you mentioned in your May 26th e-mail to Jay that
Anginias (Ananias) J. is listed on the 1900 census of Swisher Co., TX, as a nephew to Sam W. Elliff (brother to Eliza) and his birthday is shown as March 1863.He was single and b. in MO (1870 said MS).He could read and write but could not speak English as he was listed as "mute."
so I did some searching and found several really interesting things that ties TN > MO > TX together.I don't know if it's the same guy or not but I found --
Samuel Elliff, Sergeant, Co. E, Phelps' MO Infantry Regiment, Union.--Civil War Service Records, Ancestry.com
Those familiar with Civil War history of southwest MO, will instantly know this was a regiment from that area, and suggests more than one possibility regarding how Richard and Nancy's kids may have gotten to Ozark Co., MO, in the 1860s.I assumed it was probably one of the COBLE families that brought them, but obviously at least one ELLIFF family was there, too.
Then I found --
1920 Parker Co., TX, census, p.4B, ED 72, Garner Twp., Justice Precinct, Feb. 19, 1920, L.E. May:
farm, 80/80, WILLIAM D. COBLE, head, owns farm, M W 59, md., TN TN TN, farmer, farming;
Martha J., wife, F W 54, md., TN TN TN;
Mary A., dau, F W 31, single, TX TN TN;
William E., son, M W 30, single, TX TN TN, occupation none;
Leroy, son, M W 22, single, TX TN TN, occupation none [he's also on SSDI];
Samuel W. ELLIFF, uncle, M W 77, widowed, TN TN TN, retired.
This is William Daniel COBLE, son of Richard LeRoy COBLE and Eliza ELLIFF, with the wife and children I was already aware of, plus your Samuel ELLIFF.
Then on SSDI I found --
WILLIAM D. COBLE, b. Sept. 18, 1917, d. Feb. 12, 1988, residence, Weatherford, Parker Co., TX 76086, SSN 452-14-0508 issued TX before 1951.
He should have been age 2 in the 1920 census, but I couldn't pin him down from the index online at Ancestry.com
However, I did not find Ananias in Texas.He would have been around age 56-57 so maybe he was no longer living, or going by his middle name, but not all that census is indexed and linked yet because I couldn't find my own grandparents.
