Many John Ellermans

Dear Jim,

I had never heard of the Sir John Ellerman you mentioned, but I don't think he must be the same man as the John Ellerman under discussion here. This John Ellerman lived in Missouri. I do not know who he was, and it would be very interesting to find out.

You see, my great-great-great grandfather Garrett Ellerman (son of John Henry/Hinrich Ellerman) moved from Indiana to Missouri after the Civil War, and I was always told that his "brother" came with him. However, the only other relatives that I have been able to find positive proof as to having made that same move were Hermine/ Herman Ellerman and William Ellerman. Hermine (son of John Gerhardt Ellerman) was Garrett's cousin.

So who was the brother? I thought that he must have been William, but other people have told me that William, too, was a son of John Gerhardt rather than of John Henry. A census record listing William as Garrett's brother is perhaps in error.

So who WAS the brother? In his will, Garrett's father (John Henry Ellerman) mentions another son named "John." I am guessing that this son John may have also moved to Missouri, and that he may have been the grandfather (or even the great-grandfather?) of the John Henry Ellerman whose birth records Michael Harden located. All four or five generations may have been named John Henry Ellerman. I am sure there is a connection, for Washington Township is the very area (and it is a small rural area) where my parents and other descendants of Garrett Ellerman still live. But I do not have any way to figure out the exact connection.

I would love to hear from anyone who could help untangle this line for me! (Of course, I would love to hear from anyone who wished to bequest a few thousand dollars to me, too!)

By the way, if it helps anyone to recognize the people under discussion here, Garrett's name was actually John Gerhard Ellerman (like his uncle), and I believe he had an H. initial in there somewhere, too, according to his marriage records! Ah, the confusion!
