John~

Many thanks for your messages. I have just begun delving into the Ellerker family as I think I might have a possible connection to William Ellerker and Margery Percy. Since that original post I have come across some other sources obtained at my local library that have aided me with this line, but unfortunately I do not have access there to Hodgson's multi-volumed A History of Northumberland, Archaeologia Aeliana, and other essential items.
Two sources that I have you might be interested in that detail Robert Ellerker (son of William Ellerker & Margery Percy) are: Collins's Peerage of England...Greatly Augmented...by Sir Egerton Brydges, K.J. (1812), vol. 2, pp. 286-287 detailing the Percy, Widdrington, and Ellerker connection; also the will of Sir Robert Ellerker dated 6 Sept. 1565 from Wills and Inventories from the Registry at Durham Part 3 [Surtees Society Pub. 112], pp. 32-33. In the last source are listed among the debts owing the testator: John Shafto of Bavington & "Wedowe" Shafto of Bavington, his mother.
When William's nephew Sir Raffe Ellerker of Risby had his pedigree registered in Harvey's Visitation of 1552 he gave his arms as quarterly: (1) Ellerker, (2) Grindale, (3) Risby, and (4) Delamore. When John Shafto registered his pedigree in the same 1552 Visitation his wife was given as "Anne dowghter to Sir William Elerkar of Wythryngton, and by her had yssu..." John Shafto's arms are given as quarterly: (1) and (4) Shafto and (2) and (3) Bertram; and were impaled with his wife's, giving as quarterly: (1) Ellerker, (2) Grindale, (3) Risby, and (4) Delamore. The Shafto and Ellerker pedigrees were also listed in Flower's 1563 & 1564 Visitation of Yorkshire.
John Shafto (d. by 1565) was the eldest son of Cuthbert Shafto (liv. 1544) of Bavington, Northumberland, by his wife Isabell Bertram (d. by 1544), co-heiress of Brenkley and Benwell, Northumberland. These Shaftos had come by Bavington apparently through Cuthbert's grandmother whose inheritance was Bavington. The descendants of John Shafto and Anne Ellerker had much interaction with and seem to have intermarried with the Fenwick family, specifically the Fenwick family of Kirkharle, who seem to have acquired a portion of Great Bavington through dowery and the Shafto third of Brenkley by 1571 through marriage as well. In 1573 another third of Brenkley was acquired by purchase.
Due to land tenure, onomastics, chronology, and familial interaction I believe it possible that Jane Shafto, eldest daughter of John Shafto of Bavington and Brenkley & Anne Ellerker, may have been the wife of John Fenwick, Gent., of Brenkley (d. by 1590), a cousin of Marmaduke Fenwick, Gent., of Kirkharle and Great Bavington, who left a will dated in 1590. John Fenwick's widow was buried in Ponteland Parish in 1613 but due to the fading of the church register I cannot make out her given name. One of their sons was John Fenwick, Gent., of Brenkley, who married Jennet Pye in 1612 in Ponteland Parish, and he was alive as late as 1629 when he was a grand juror in the Northumberland Quarter Sessions. Two of their children were immigrants to North America: Cuthbert Fenwick (1614-1655), Gent., & Jane (Fenwick) Smyth-Taylor-Eltonhead (1618-1659).

I hope I have not repeated too much of what you might already know. If I can supply you with copies of the references I made to Robert Ellerker (son of William) let me know and I will send them to you.

Kind regards,

Todd Whitesides
