Gateway Press sent me the typeset manuscript about 6 mos. after the book was published, and I still have it. They also sent me about 200 copies of the Ellerbe Crest in color.
It should be a fairly easy task to reprint the book at a significantly lower cost than the original publication. I will investigate the cost because there have been enough queries in the past ten years to indicate there are genealogists out there who want a copy of their own. We all know it has some inaccuracies and inferred relationships. But I was careful to point out the inferred reltionships (they mostly occur in Colonial America where records of births, deaths, marriages were not good).
I openly apologized to the Ellerbe Family Association of America for the innacuracies at the 1987 reunion. I accept responsibility for the typographical errors and the spelling errors. The proofing of the manuscript was done by several people as well as by me. We did not do as good a job as we should have. There was a push to have the book in people's hands before the 1986 reunion. (I live with deadlines, rush, rush, rush)
Nonetheless, the book is a a good basis for future genealogists to build on. All of you need to consider I am an engineer, not a perfectionist (if I were a perfectionist the book would never have been printed and many people would never have known what I put between those hardback covers). Engineers have a saying "It's close enough for engneering purposes." That probably infuriates genealogical purists, and I regret that, sincerely.
