Ellegoods before Virginia

Hello! I had no idea there were so many of us out there! I'm in Illinois, along with the rest of my immediate family originating in Decatur. I've been researching this for a while now and there seem to be two/three different theories on where the Ellegoods' in America came from. One was the Elias Legardo, who I've been seeing on this forum, and the Thomas Ellegood as well. I found in the College of William and Mary geneology books a mention of a man named Guilluame a la Guerre, who came to the colonies in the 1600's who's name was changed to Ellegood. I'm personally looking for the meaning of the last name and info, if any, on the Ellegoods before they came to Virginia. I'd like to know where my family fits into all of this. Thanks for any help!
