Melissa, Elzora gave you good advice. I would like to add a few things1. Start with yourself. You may want to start with a loose leaf notebook. (That's old fashioned guys but for starters it is a good way to go). Write down your name,
birthday, where you were born. If you are married and have children, put that info on one sheet of paper. Then do the same thing for your parents on a sheet of paper. Put down the date and place each of them were born, Put their marriage date on and then list your brothers & sisters, when and where they were born, name their spouce and their children. Do the same for the next generations on both sides. Always make note of where you got the information. That's called documentating. If your grandmother told you write it down, if you got it from a book and include the name of the book and the arthur There was at one time family group sheets you could by and fill out. By starting with your self you are starting a record book. If you don't know where someone was born put a question mark in a place so you can remember to look for that information.
Do go to your library. There is a lot of good books to guide you along.
I am going through my Elkins material to see if I can find something for you on the little information you posted.
I published The Elkins Eagle for 5 1/2 years. I am in the process of putting them on a CD. I have several Elkins Books I can check too.
Spartanburg SC is in Spartanburg County. I also have a line that was there pretty early. Go on the Spartanburg Co. SC Gen Forum and post what you know. Someone there may be kind enough to look up things for you. I have found over my many years that most genealogist are more than willing to share and help others. You are sure to find others connected to you and they will be happy to find you. Above all don't get discouraged. Feel free to email me directly and ask questions.
Clovis byars Herring.
Good luck and I will let you know what I find.
