I'm not sure I have an answer for you. But my first thought was of James Elkin/s, even though it's been years since I worked with this. Most researchers believe James Elkin/s and Gabriel Elkins were brothers. Both were in the Henry/Patrick/Pittsylvania County VA area when very young, shortly in NC, then in the part of Warren County, TN which later became Cannon County. James went on to Kentucky, and a third man also thought to possibly be a brother went to Illinois. A son of the Illinois "brother" moved to Barry/Lawrence County MO where one of his descendants, Walter C. Elkins, married Cleo Nix who through her great grandmothers, Martha Virginia (Elkins) Fowler and Melissa Caroline "Cal" (Elkins) Melton, was twice descended from Gabriel. Perhaps the marker leads back to James Elkin which should be similar to that of Gabriel's if our speculation is right. I don't have an answer to your original question "Why does a surname Gillespie trace a paternal line back to an Elkins?"
