My great grandfather was Thomas Elias, married at Resolven in Glamorgan in 1878.Large family including Richard who moved to Scranton PA. My grandfather Elias Elias(!) was a coalminer and composer, Fellow of the Tonic Sol Fah College in Cardiff.(He did talk of family in Carmarthenshire, to add to David Elias's comments.)No German connections to my knowledge.
