John Ogilvie Elgin and Martha Dorcas Hailey Elgin were my three greats grandparents on my
mother's side. I have extensive information on he and his family, but it is not infront of me right now, as I am at college killing time between classes. I will post all the correct information on Monday or Tuesday, which is the next time that I will be here at
University of Maryland, and will ahve access to a computer, but I will tell you what I know off the top of my head.
John was born to William S. Elgin and Mary Garrett Elgin. The date of his bith is in dispute between family info, and discrepencies on official documents. He has several siblings whose names and dates I will furnish next week. The information that you have on his military service is pretty much all that is known, except family lore has it that he was put in prison near the end of the war for being a "traitor" to the Union. People in the family trying to verify that have yet to find records on him pertaining to any imprisonment. He was also
supposed to be the first Confederate soldier at Gettysburg. Shortly after the war, in 1865, he married Martha Haley (Mattie was her nickname) who is referred to as a "Virginia girl" in an obituary about Johnny O. Her parents were Irish, whether of birth or descent I don't know, but a quick trip to the Nat'l archives should tell me that. Mattie and John did have twelve children who I will try to name from memory (but dates, and full and full names will have to wait until next week): Estelle ( my grandmother always refers to her as Aunt Es), Emily (Aunt Em), Maxine (Aunt Minn), Wade Hampton, Suzell (Aunt Susie), Charles Fenton, Fenton Charles (Yes, they're different people), Jane (Aunt Janie), and James (Jim), who was my great-great grandfather. Well, those are all that I could name, so I've forgotten three. Johnny O.is buried at Clifton Cemetery, on Yates Ford Road, Clifton, Virginia. I know because I was just there this summer, and saw his, Mattie's, and Wade's graves. Charles Fenton and Fenton Charles are there too and so is John's daughter Jane (Janie) Mathers.
After the war, John was a farmer near Clifton. Mattie died in, I think 1907, and John in 1927- I do have these dates for sure
James Bayard Elgin (John's son, and my gg grandfather) married Lottie Estelle Blaine in December 1903. They had one son, Charles Blaine Elgin (1/9/1905-6/20/1971)who was called "Daddy Charlie" by his grandkids. Lottie and James always lived in D.C. during their married life. James was a butcher and Lottie a baker. Charles became a salesman and later a cook. He married Myrtle Eleanor Jones on March 15, 1926, and had six children:
Charles B. Elgin Jr. (1934- )
Carol Ann Elgin (1938- )
a)Andrew M. Elgin (1944-1961)
b)Robert William Elgin (1944- )
c)John Ogilvie Elgin (1944- )
Sharon Linda Elgin (1946- )
Carol is my maternal grandmother.
