Just like Will Rogers, "All I know is what I read [in the genealogy books]." Here is the relevant quotation: "Robert Eley III, son of Jane (Braswell) Stokes and Robert Eley II, made a very instructive deed on Dec. 9, 1706, as follows: "Indenture between Robert Eley and Lt. Col. Henry Baker of the Upper Parish of Isle of Wight, 400 acres of land near a certain plantation called "Wootens" granted to my grandfather, Robert Eley, being part of a patent of 600 acres bearing date of Sept. 17, 1639, descended to me as heir at law of my grandfather, Robert Eley." Martha Eley of the Upper Parish of Nansemond appoints her father, James Daughtie, attorney to surrender her dower rights to Colonel Baker. (D. B. 2-56) James Daughtie, on June 8, 1699, assigned a patent of 198 acres near King Sale, which was granted him April 26, 1698, to Robert Eley. Deed was signed by him and his wife Elizabeth, both of Nansemond. Robert Eley III made his will April 5, 1738, probated July 23, 1739. As Robert Eely Sr., he mentions son Robert, and gives him 100 acres on Long Branch, adjoining John Roberts to Henry Saunders' line to White Oak in Little Poquoson and down to Main Swamp, adjoining John Lear. To son James Eley, 150 acres along John Roberts' line and long Branch between Jeremiah Exum and myself; to son, Edward Eley, 80 acres lying at what was formerly Samuel Watson's to the Main Swamp, etc.; to son Michael Eley, the plantation where I now live, and all the appurtenances thereto belonging, only reserving to my two daughters Christian [mentioned in Quaker Records] and Mourning Eley, the privilege to live on said plantation with their brother Michael during their maidenhood or until they marry; if Michael should die, then to son William; to William a bequest; daughter, Martha Williams; to Martha daughter of my son James; son Eley; daughter; Rebecca Williams; daughter Mourning Eley; sons, Michael and Robert, executors. Witnesses: Joseph White, William Denson [#1230], George Armstrong. (W.B. 4, 223) Children of Martha (Daughtie) and Robert Eley III. All of their children are mentioned in the above will... William m. Elizabeth daughter of William Denson (W. B. 5-274)" (1) 1) Bodie, John Bennett; Southside Virginia Families (Gen Pub Co 1996) Vol. I, p. 91
