Hi there - I know this is ages since you posted your message but I have only just come across the Gouldthorpe name. I am not related but an Emma Gouldthorpe married a distant relation of mine way back in 1880 in Chesterfield. During my efforts to trace her I came across your family e.g. Isiah Gouldthorpe and his wife Emma b 1830 in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 census. Due to this is was able to pinpoint that my Emma b 1830 was another Emma who I had found on the census returns. However you may be able to help me as there is some confusion over my Emma and in short I believe that she 'left' my William Sharp and appears as a widow under the Gouldthorpe name, with one of her sons when in fact she was not widowed. I have your family in 1861 Court 2, charles Street listed as Isiah and Emma both born about 1830 in Sheffield and with William b 1855, Sarah b 1857 and Olivia b 1860. In 1871 they are at 105 Rockingham Street, Court no.1 with William, (Sarah had married a Mr. Greaves), Olivia is not there?, Joe b 1868. By 1891 they are at 9 House, Smithfield Court they have with them Sarah as married and now Greaves,Emma b 1872 . I believe Isiah (Josiah) was a horn scale presser cutler as was his son William. Therefore my question is did she have an Ernest Gouldthorpe b 1874 in Sheffield and would there be any reason why she and Ernest alone would be living in Ward Yards, Dronfield and that she would die in 1900 registred at Chesterfield. If the Answer is yes then 'my' Emma did indeed die before 1891 and William is indeed widowed. I would appreciate your help on this query.
