Obadiah Eldridge of NJ - Sorting out
Sorting out the Obadiah Eldridges of New Jersey
Karen Henry and I have been working together to determine one Obadiah Eldridge from the other. Here is what we have put together so far.A reference number precedes each fact and the references are at the bottom. Each idea is preceded by the tag IDEA and has no real proof behind it but seems to make sense.I may not have grouped the IDEAs and REFerences together correctly so I hope you can help to support or dispute the ideas and references below. It’s certainly a challenge.
Thanks for the help.

#1. Obadiah Eldridge,
IDEA: son of Thomas and Amey Eldridge, brother of Jonathan Eldridge (first in America)
IDEA: 1658, 4, 15 born in Driffield, Gloucester, England
REF2:1699daughter Mary born (based on age at death)
REF2:1768 12-4 Mary, daughter of Obediah died at age 69
IDEA: I’ve seen several gen posts stating that Jonathan Eldridge came over in 1678 on the ship SUCCESS.It’s even on this website: www.ristenbatt.com/genealogy/sucesshp.htm.However, I was always told as a child that my ancestors came over on a ship called the SHIELD and I found mention of this ship in REF8.This book even shows a picture of the “Old buttonwood on River Bank.Traditionally the tree to which the SHIELD was moored in 1678.”
I found a passage in REF8, pg 33. which seems to suggest that Jonathan Eldridge didn’t come on the SHIELD or the SUCCESS.The SHIELD arrived at Burlington in “10th month (December) 1678 O.S.It records many of the passengers on the SHIELD but then it states “The ship from London, to which Smith referred, brought ‘John Denn, Thomas Kent, John Hollinshead, with their families, William Hewlings, Abraham Hewlings, Jonathan Eldridge, Thomas Kirby, John Petty and others’”.So I don’t believe it was the SHIELD or the SUCCESS that brought Jonathan Eldridge to America but another London ship.
The question is what ship carried Obadiah #1 to America?
#2. Obadiah Eldridge
IDEA:1694Obadiah born (Idea from Karen Henry)
REF10: 1761 4-12Obadiah died
REF10:Obadiah #2 had a son named Obadiah
#3. Obadiah Eldridge
REF1: son of Jonathan
REF2: 1696Obadiah born (based on age at death)
REF1: 1731, 8, 7.married first Phebe Guest
REF2: 1732 6-17.Phebe Eldridge (nee Guest) buried
REF1: 1736, 2, 22married Mary Oldman (nee Garret)
REF2: 1741 9-20Hannah, daughter of Obadiah & Mary, died
REF2: 1744 4-13Joseph, son of Obadiah, died
REF2: 1746 4-1Martha, daughter of Obadiah, died
REF1: 1749, 6, 25Obadiah & wife, Mary disowned from the Phila. MM
REF2: 1770 7-27Obadiah died ae 74
IDEA: The birth and death of this Obadiah are skeptical because the record doesn’t specifically identify him.I’m guessing it’s him because many of his records are in REF1 and REF2 e.g. marriages and children. But I could also argue that the 1749 entry shows he was disowned so there should be no later entry for this Obadiah. What do you think?
