Mary,

I know of Eldreds in Pennsylvania. I haven't done much of anything on Eldridges. What gets confusing, as far as I have researched, some of the Eldridges changed their name from Eldred to Eldridge (and even back again), and some did not (i.e.: they came over from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Germany, etc with the Eldridge name). And in other case, it just isn't clear. This was kind of the original intent of my post, to see if anyone had any insight into this little detail. I have recently expanded my research. I am now going to look into some of the Eldridges, because in some case, at least, they are one and the same. I think there are some cases where an individual was born with one or the other surname (Eldred or Eldridge), and due to illiteracy, changed it back and forth over the course of his or her life.... makes me crazy..
