NOTED PILOT GOES TO HIS FINAL PORT
Captain Eldredge, one of the famous Delaware Bay and River Pilots dies at home of his son here.
Capt. FRANCIS S. ELDREDGE, who had been living with his son, LORING, in South Cape May the past five years, since the death of his wife in November 1921, passed away last Saturday night, at the age of 91 years.
Born at Cold Spring, Cape May County, April 22, 1836, of JEREMIAH LEAMING and HARRIET TOMLIN ELDREDGE, reared in a large family, he added to his common school education a course at Pennington.
Captain Eldredge then became a pilot's apprentice, and after efficient apprenticeship became fully endowed with full draught licences in 1867. Captain Eldredge was a pilot of the old school, starting when only sailing vessels were in use, "full rigged ships and batquatines", and continuing until the time of the largest of steam carriers of the present day.
He was known from Maine to the Gulf Coast as a competent, capable and reliable man, whose word was all sufficient for safety and comfort to those who came under his command. He was one of the Pilots who led the way to the present organization of capability. "The Pilots Association for the Bay and River Delaware," and of which organization he was Treasurer for a long term, and always deeply interested and energetic for the welfare. A number of times he was elected and sent as a delagate to the American Pilots Association of the Atlantic Coast to bring about the affiliation of the Atlantic Sea Board for efficiency and service to all of the Commercial World. Of him it can be said, he was faithful to all of his duties, until his retirement from service in 1915, and to his family until his death May 7th, 1927.
He married ELIZABETH JOHNSON, January 30, 1860, and to them were born three sons, LORING B., JOSEPH J, deceased and F. GOODALL. He was a devout Christian character and a "Grand Old Man."
