When Henry, the youngest of the three sons, was old enough to marry, his parents sought a noble wife for him. They heard of Mathilda, a beautiful girl of noble lineage raised and educated in the convent of Herford, and a descendant of Widukind, the Saxon duke who had led the fiercest resistance against Charlemagne's efforts to convert the Saxons to Christianity in the late eighth century. The vitae describe in detail Widukind's conversion at Charlemagne's hand, then shift to "Mathilda's more recent relatives, including her father Tiedericus, mother Reinheld, and grandmother Mathilda, abbess of Herford who oversaw Mathilda's upbringing. In addition to noting that Mathilda could read, these vitae stressed Mathilda's virtues, notably her nobility, uprightness, and virtue." "Both vitae skip the first years of Henry's and Mathilda's married life, mentioning only Otto the Illustrious' death three years later, at which point the highest-ranking nobles (principes regni) elected Henry duke and then, almost in the same sentence, made him king, celebrating and recognizing him as the first king from Saxony. As king, Henry conquered a number of foreign peoples, including Slavs, Danes, Bavarians, and Bohemians. He engaged in Christian activities, building and repairing churches, as well as caring for the poor and widows." " Henry, for example, was elected leader of the Saxons because he was the strongest in arms ("armis Saxonum erat fortissimus"). "Hatheburg, Henry's first wife, was actually a widow before her marriage to Henry. She also is presumed to have taken the veil. Marrying Henry after that, as she did, was thus illegal in the eyes of the church, and the bishop of Halberstadt endeavored to dissolve the marriage before Henry had even sought a divorce. After their separation, Hatheburg returned to the cloister, and Henry retained the lands she had brought to the marriage, including the city of Merseburg. See Leyser, Rule and Conflict, 12. " "At the time of his first marriage, Henry would have been seen as very unlikely to gain ducal power. Hatheburg was thus a good match, as she brought with her lands in and around Merseburg, providing Henry with sources of wealth and power." Germany in the 10th and 11th centuries. Conrad I was quite unequal to the situation in Germany. According to the beliefs of contemporaries, his failure meant that his house was luckless and lacked the prosperity-bringing virtues that belonged to true kingship. On his deathbed in 918, he therefore proposed that the crown, which in 911 had remained with the Franks, should now pass to the leading man in Saxony, the Liudolfing Henry (later called the Fowler). Henry I was elected by the Saxons and Franks at Fritzlar, their ancient meeting place, in 919. With a monarch of their own race, the Saxons now took over the burden and the rewards of being the kingmaking people. The centre of gravity shifted to eastern Saxony, where the Liudolfing lands lay. Henry I also called HENRY THE FOWLER, German HEINRICH DER VOGLER (b. c. 876--d. John FOWLER (1) was born about 1340 in Sherbourne, Oxford, England. The earliest traces of the sturdy name of Fowler date from the time when fierce invaders from the North were changing the map and history of Europe by their sweeping invasions of France, and later England. This name is of ancient Anglo-Norman origin, and comes from the Anglo-Saxon word "Fugal", meaning fowl. However, most of the Fowlers in America are of English descent. It seems that the early bearers of our name not only "pursued and captured wild fowl", but also sold them, for in its early form, the French suffix, "ere", following "fowl" meant an agent or dealer. Old English and early American records carry frequent mention of the name in various forms, such as "Fouler", but "Fowler" is the generally accepted form. Long before they accompanied William the Conqueror during his conquest of England, the early Fowlers seem to have taken part in the successful invasion of France, under the leadership of the Norseman Rolfe, or Rollo, who conquered that country about the beginning of the Tenth Century. But although they were able to overcome the inhabitants of the country in battle, Rolfe's men could not withstand the civilization they found there and soon assumed the ways and customs of the land. For centuries, Gaul, or France, had felt the influence of Roman civilization, and eventually there existed there a fusion of French, Roman, Teutonic and Norse races, all speaking the French tongue. Across the channel lay England, which was to be the home of the Fowlers for many centuries. According to science, the British Isles were in prehistoric times a part of the Continent, but since it lay, in island form, too far West to benefit by the early civilizing influences of the countries bordering the Mediterranean, it was still a wild country when others had reached civilization to a high degree. Caesar's main purpose in conquering Britain lay in keeping the wild inhabitants of the country from invading Gaul, but even while Britain was under Roman dominance, she experienced numerous invasions from other races. From the North, in what is now Scotland, came the ravaging Picts. From Ireland came the Scots, who later settled in Scotland. From across the channel came the Danes and Angles, the last of whom perhaps did more than any other race to totally subject the Britons prior to the coming of the Normans. As Duke of Normandy, the man who was to become known as William the Conqueror had only a far-fetched claim to the English crown. But when he found that Harold had been chosen King of England to succeed King Edward, in January, 1066, he immediately put in a claim for the crown himself. During the whole of that spring and summer, ships for his English invasion were being built in the Norman harbors. William met Harold in battle on October 14 that year, and no doubt a number of the Fowlers who went to England about that time took part in the famous conflict. Although William had 10,000 trained Norman fighters with him, it was only after using various strategic maneuvers that he got the English army, with smaller force, to move down from their position on a hill, and thus offer his men a chance to make a successful attack. Finally, finding the weapons of his archers were not laying down the deadly fire he expected, he ordered his men to shoot their arrows into the air. The bowmen obeyed and a shower of arrows rained upon the English, one of them piercing Harold's eye, stretching him lifeless on the ground. On Christmas Day, 1066, William was chosen king by acclamation at Edward's Abbey at Westminster in London. The Normans outside mistook the shouts of applause for a tumult against their Duke, and set fire to the houses around. The English rushed out to save their property, and William, frightened for the only time in his life, was left alone with the priests. Not knowing what was next to follow, he was crowned King of the English, in an empty church, amid the crackling of flames and the shouts of men struggling outside. Absolutely fearless and with an iron will, William set about welding a united kingdom where only a loosely-bound, semi barbaric country had existed before. Working with ruthless vigor at times, he brought order out of chaos, demoted powerful Earls who might revolt, wrought far-reaching changes in the country's religious forms, promoted education, and set up an efficient form of taxation. It was under the heading of taxation--the first systematic levying the country had known--that the name Fowler first appears in English records. William sent commissioners throughout the country to make appraisals on the property owned by his subjects. The result of their inquiries was embodied in Domesday Book, so called because it was no more possible to appeal from it than from the Last Judgement. The Fowlers were among those listed in this early record of English property owners. Just how closely this survey by "The Conqueror" was conducted is shown by an old account that says, rather complainingly: "So very narrowly he let speer it out that there was not a single hide nor a yard of land, nor so much as--it is a shame to tell, though he thought it no shame to do--an ox nor a cow nor a swine was left that was not set in his writ." The chronicler who wrote these words was an English monk at Peterborough. Thus, going into England with the indomitable William, the Fowlers can be said to have arrived there at a time when the country first took form and, ceasing to be a semi-civilized island off the Western coast of Europe, began to lay the foundations of one of the world's great powers today. For once the powerful and potentially dangerous Earls had been subdued, and order and system had been established; the invading Normans became builders instead of destroyers. John FOWLER and Margaret LOVEDAY had the following children:[Fowler, Reginaldus, Descendents.FTW] From Mike Fowler June 2000 John acquired an estate in Bucks which he named Foxley; m. after 1375 and before 1380, Margaret, daughter of Henry Loveday, and d. in the reign of Henry IV, leaving a son and heir. Sir William FOWLER of Rycott, Oxford(3) was born about 1400 in Sherbourne, Oxford, England.(2) It was during the Third Crusade, 1191, in which Richard the Lion Hearted of England, Philip II of France, and Emperor Frederick Barbarosa took part, that Richard Fowler came into prominence. He took with him and maintained during this crusade to Palestine a body of British bowmen, all of whom were his own tenants. The Third Crusade has been described as a "glorious but fruitless effort for the recovery of Palestine." However, Richard Fowler's services were so brilliant that King Richard bestowed upon him the crest with our family's present coat-of-arms and a grant of land in Abbey-Cwyn-Hir. According to tradition, it was during the seige of Acre that Richard Fowler blocked an attempt of the infidels to surprise and capture the Christian camp, and that it was this brilliant stroke that brought him knighthood. From Sir Richard Fowler, this hero of the Third Crusade, we are direct descendants. Sir William Fowler of Rycot, Oxford, fourth in descent from Sir Richard, was the father of the second Sir Richard Fowler, knighted by King Edward IV and created Chancelor of the Duchy of Lancaster. He moved to New Haven, Connecticut, then called Quinnipac, in 30 March, 1638 and later moved to Milford in 1639. From the New England Historical & Genealogical Register Vol. 11 page 248 William Fowler came over in the company of Rev. John Davenport, Governor. Eaton and others, and arrived at Boston 26 June 1637. William Fowler is mentioned as a prisoner in Bridewell with other Puritans in the year 1592. The list of poisoners is immediately preceded by a petition addressed to the Lord Treasurer by many of the "poor Cristiains impresoned by the Bishops in sundry prisons in and about London." About this time a congregation of Puritans were discovered at Islington, which was then and now is a part of London in fact. He was an old man when he settled in Milford, having died sixty-eight years after, and if he was, say, twenty at imprisonment, this would make him 88. There is therefore nothing improbable in the supposition that the prisoner was the William Fowler that came to New Haven. If so, he was probably from Islington, or near London. In this connection we introduce the following from " Weever's Funeral Monuments," of " Monumental remains at Islington near London." -- "Here ---- John Fowler -- 1538," and "Alis Fowler, wife of Robert Fowler, Esquire, who d. ---- , 1540;" "Divers of the family lie here interred; the ancestors of Sir Thomas Fowler, Knight and Baronet, living 1630." Mr. Davenport was born in Warwickshire, and removed to London, where he was vicar of St. Stephen's Church, Mr. Eaton, another of the New Haven company, was a member of this Church, and also from Warwickshire -- the ancestors of both being originally from the County of Chester. Mr. Fowler sailed with this company from Boston, and arrived at New Haven in April, 1638, and was at the famous meeting in Mr. Newman's barn, 4 June, 1639, when the peculiar constitution and policy of Mr. Davenport, which afterwards characterized the New Haven Colony, was agreed upon. Mr. Fowler subscribed to that agreement. In the spring of 1639, the settlement of Milford had been arranged, and Mr. Fowler is the first named of the trustees, and the only one bearing the honorable prefix of Mr." At the first meeting of the Milford Company he was chosen one of the "Judges." The church was organized 1639, and he was elected one of the "seven pillars," -- Mr. Peter Prudden, Pastor. Mr. Fowler was elected magistrate, and reappointed yearly to 1654. In 1640, by agreement with the town, he built a mill, the first erected in New Haven Colony, and which is now in possession of his descendants. It is probable that Mr. Fowler was one among those of the first settlers who had received a classical education in his native country. His name is in the roll of planters at New Haven, 1642, as having an &800 estate, and a family of three persons. He d. 25 Jan 1660-1, and his will was presented by his son William to the General Court of the Colony 1661, but was not recorded, and being unfortunately lost, we are without guide as to his family. His children were born before his removal to America, he at the time of his settlement being an old man, and "his family of three" were doubtless himself, wife and one child. The child may have been Mary who married John Caffing. There is nothing inconsistent in this supposition and tradition that Ambrose of Wia(n?)dsor, and John, who settled in Guilford, were brothers of William Fowler, Jr., (who settled at Milford,) and sons of Mr. William Fowler the magistrate. He was a land holder at New Haven, where he was living, 1655. East Haven, "Fowler's Cove," and "Fowler's Creek," now so-called were named from him. About two miles from New Haven, now the village of Whitneyville, and on the site of the establishment for the manufacture of fire-arms, erected by Eli Whitney, the inventor of the cotton gin, Mr. Fowler built a mill, 1645. which the town bought of him, 3d of January, 1659, for one hundred pounds. He was chosen successively, "Sergeant," "Lieutenant," and "Captain," of the "Town Company" and is mentioned in the Colonial Records of Hartford and New Haven, as one to raise troops as a defence against a threatened incursion of the Dutch. He first m., as early as 1645, Mary dau. of Edward and Ann Tapp, sister of Jane Tapp, wife of Governor Treat, by whom were born to him all his children. He m. 2d, Nov. 1st, 1670, at Milford, widow Elizabeth (Alsop) Baldwin. She was living at the date of his death, and as we learn from his will, was a "tender, dutiful and loving wife," and he desired that she might continue to "live with his children, to be a guide and help them as a mother, and head of a family." He removed and settled at Milford, about the time of his father's death, 1660, where a portion of his children were born and baptized. His will is dated 3d October, 1682, and probated, June, 1683. He gives property to "his eldest son John, to encourage him to tend the mill built by his father."
