does anyone know why hartwell matthews elder died in texas in 1844? i think he was there because some of his children moved there. Perhaps he was visiting or helping them move. I find his wife parmelia in the 1850 census in scull shoals oconee ga as well as their son Edmund G Elder and his wife Susan Hughey and their female child. They are both listed on the slave schedules as owners. Edmund G died in 1854 at the age of 34, I think his wife must have died also because i find one of their 4 male children (joseph Armstrong Elder-my gggrandfather living with his grandmother Susan Hughey (Widow of Joseph A Hughey) He was 6 in the 1860 census. He appears still living with his grandmother in the 1880 census. Grandmother Susan Hughey was related to the hughey family in Orange Co. Florida
