Ekis Family Genealogy Forum

Thank you for your Illinois Census data. William Ekis from Barbour, VA-WV seems to have gone to Illinois and I found a Beatrice Ekis in Springfield, Illinois that appear to be a descendant of him. William was married before going west and had several children when he moved.
But your information on the other "Ekis" is particularly interesting because they both seem to have come from MD. I believe that the four who resided in Randolph Co., VA beginning in about 1810-1820 were from western Maryland. William went to IL, Benjamin remained in Barbour Co., VA-WV and some descendants in Taylor Co., WV, Elizabeth married a William Coffman in Randolph Co., VA and remained there until William & Elizabeth went west to Iowa-Missouri after the Civil War. The other sister, Hester, married Henry Wilson and lived across the road from Benjamin and Elizabeth (Ekis) Coffman. When Hester died her parents were listed in the death record as Peter & Barbara Ekis. This couple or perhaps Peter's sibling may be connected with your two Ekis from Maryland. There is a widow Ekis in Alleghany Co., MD a decade after a P. Ekis appears in a MD census. We doubt that Peter ever came to Randolph Co., VA, but his widow likely came to be with relatives and remarried and had a second family in Barbour Co. (It is possible Barbara might be connected to a Haller, Wilson or Hovatter family.) I don't believe we have firm evidence as to when she died, but she is likely buried in the Shiloh Church cemetery if she survived long enough. We have found only the four Ekis children of Barbara and Peter.
