Eilers couple fled germany/poland, He died, she didn't

I am looking for information regarding my great grandmother Eilers' given name (found her name on my grandfather's cert of death) and his natural father's name. Family history has it that they were fleeing from germany/poland, Dansing (sp?) area. He was killed, she managed to get to America, and married a Mr. Bukowski (given name unknown, location unknown) who adopted my grandfather. My grandfathers name was Joseph John Bukowski. I do not know if Eilers is my great grandmother's maiden name, or her married name, before she married the american Bukowski. Joseph John Bukowski's listed date of birth for his social security card was September 20, 1908, Issued in Iowa before 1951. He was only six months old when his parents fled the country. I am unable to find naturalization or immigration papers, as I don't know her given name, and I can't locate adoption papers, because I don't know Bukowski's given name. Does this sound familiar to anyone?
