half my history, is a complete mystery

I am a 29 year old female who would like to know more about the side of my family that I never knew. I am not experienced in geneology, but thought there might be those here, who could give me some advise on where I should start. I was born in MN in 1972. My father is Jerry George Eiler, only child of Godfrey G. and Redella Eiler. I know that my grandpa had at least one brother (Roman), and I think at least one sister.
I was told that My ansestors came originally from Germany, but I have no idea when. This is all I know.
nother thing that I am curious over; there is a possibility that my father may have fathered other children before me that possibly were adopted. I might have half-siblings out there that I don't know about.
If there is anyone who might know ways I can research this info, I would be really interested to fond out these things, and satisfy my curiosity. Any replies would be appreciated. My e-mail is...
Thanks, Leslie Eiler
