Dear RuthAnn,
I too ,had a Great Grandfather, named George Detlef Ehlers. He originally immigrated to Iowa, he married a Mary Clancy and homesteaded near Glennville Nebraska. He had two sones, John Henry and William, and two daughters, Mary and Margurite.
His last remaining years were spent with my Grandfather, John Henry Ehlers and my Grandmother Francis Ehlers near Elbert Colorado on a Dairy Farm.
My grandfather John Henry or (Hank) as he was called had a brother William whom homesteaded near Stratton, Colorado and had two sons, William and Charles. My Grandfather had three sons, John, Paul and Jerome, my father, and three daughters, Doris,Cleo and Grace.
There could be some connection, I need to check the original Immigration and Naturalization papers that I have, but I believe he came over from Holstein. Please pass this onto Bill as well and maybe I can be of some help.
It may be that the Detlef is a cooincidence or maybe the relation is there to the two people we are talking of.
I am sure that they are not the same person obviously, but in some way we may be related.
My great grandfather immigrated only with a younger brother, his brother died from a kick in the headby a farm horse.
That I know of, no sisters or parents immigrated with them, from what I gather the parents, my great great grandparents stayed on in Germany.
Would love to hear from all of you and Hope this may help.
Thanks,
George D. Ehlers
