Shelley

I am doing Clampton research. They all came from around the Colchester area of Essex. I know there has been a change of name because I have found some people who could write and wrote their name as Clampton, but they appeared on the census as Clampin. I have found a brother and sister who were down as Clampin, and then Clampton and then one was down on another census as Clampin and the other was down as Clampton. There are thousands of Clampins around, lots of whom came from this area. There are quite a lot of Clamptons but not as many as Clampin. In the US there are mega thousands of Clampins. With a country accent whengiving the name to a vicar or a parish enumerator Clampin can sound like Clampton and nobody would know if it was written down wrong because they could not read. My Clamptons all come from the Essex/Suffolk area from 1796 to today.

Beryl Clampton
